Sri Lanka showcased a clinical run chase to defeat Afghanistan by six wickets in the 11th match of the Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi. Chasing 170 for victory, the islanders crossed the finish line with eight balls to spare, tightening their grip on the Group B standings.
Mohammad Nabi Powers Afghanistan to 169/8
After being sent in to bat first, Afghanistan lost early wickets but found a saviour in veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. Walking in at 71/5, Nabi produced one of the innings of the tournament – a blistering 60 off just 22 balls, including three fours and six massive sixes at a strike rate of 272.7. Rashid Khan chipped in with 24 off 23 to push Afghanistan to a competitive 169/8.
Sri Lanka’s bowling had a mixed night. Nuwan Thushara was exceptional, finishing with 4/18 in his four overs, including key wickets up front. Dasun Shanaka (1/29) and Wanindu Hasaranga (0/18) also kept things in check, while Dushmantha Chameera and Dunith Wellalage were taken for runs.
Kusal Mendis Leads the Chase
Sri Lanka’s reply started shakily with Pathum Nissanka (6) and Kamil Mishara (4) falling early. But wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis anchored the innings beautifully, striking an unbeaten 74 off 52 balls with 10 boundaries. He was supported by Kusal Perera’s brisk 28 and a late cameo from Kamindu Mendis, who smashed 26* off 13 with two sixes to finish the job.
Sri Lanka reached 171/4 in just 18.4 overs at a run rate of 9.16. Afghanistan’s bowling attack struggled to maintain pressure, conceding 15 wides in total. Noor Ahmad (1/37) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (1/42) picked up a wicket each, but it wasn’t enough.
